Protecting items would not be possible, you would be inable to trade them.
Protecting characters from deletion seems feasible.

However people doesn't care about virtual money more than the achievement of their characters.
Here's a few interesting quotes from people who participated in the thread.
(emphasis/bolding is mine. I bolded parts that show what players care about.)

A lot of peace and mind knowing that your time spent playing this game doesn't disappear in the blink of an eye due to a second of someone's malicious intent.

You see?
It is not the virtual gold that matters,
to most it is the time spent in the game getting titles and improving their characters.
The time spent doing missions, exploring, capping elites, vanquishing, getting legendary survivors or legendary defender of ascalon, and so on.
They (We) don't want to lose that.

You should also be able to lock your xunlai account so that you cannot access it for a certain period of time (or make a PIN number to access the xunlai account so that account thiefs aren't able to get anything from you even if they steal your account)

That means that someone has gotten the username and password of the account.

This subject has been already discussed in the previous pages.
Here's a few quotes:

My answer to the poster was: "would you prefer your character deleted, or your slots locked for 6/3 months?"
If (in the remote occurrence) someone stole my account and locked all my char, I would wait the 6/3 months for them to get unlocked, thanking that Anet had made such a security option.
Some of the posters here seem to share this opinion.
(Obviously, if I had my account stolen and there was no such "lock", I would be cursing my own unawareness not Anet, since it is not ArenaNet's fault if I am careless with my login information)
And then the solution:

Guys,

Sorry, but if you think about it, this poll isn't going to be useful. Saying "I want to pay" or "I want it free" isn't a reasonable set of options. The only meaningful poll is "I would pay for this service" or "I would not pay for this service." Since I have already told you that the programming team is not available to add this feature, the only point of discussion I have with the team is "They would like this, and they are willing to pay." As I've said before, the cost of programming and implementation (which takes members of several teams) and the cost of support is prohibitive. The business team would have to consider a lot of factors (such as what it would cost to develop, how many would be likely to use it, those saying they'd pay, and then deciding not to do so), and even then it may simply be impossible to add this feature no matter how many were potentially able and willing to pay a fee for the service.

Hopefully interest for this feature will lead to it being added to GW2. But thinking long term, will character locking have to be developed eventually when GW2 comes along. As it has been said a character from GW2 would get benefits for achievements from GW1 through the HoM. This raises a couple of scenerios. The first would be if the GW1 character that a GW2 character is linked with is delited, would the GW2 character lose its rewards that moment. Or if the benefits are asigned at GW2 character creation, would that make it that if there was a benefit we desired latter on, we couldn't just hop back to GW1 and unlock it. I guess I'd like that when character are linked between the two games, the GW1 character is locked. This would prevent benefit being lost from delition, while allowing people to return to GW1 to unlock for benefits.

How about being able to lock characters (Or at least storage!) using an on-screen keypad? In order to prevent keyloggers from recording the movements, these numbers could be randomized on screen, and the order of the digits would change after each digit was entered. This system would be a lot like RuneScape's Bank Pin system.

desperately needed after the string of hackings recently...
I have 3 characters i would hace to lock indefinately, my 2 LDoA characters and my PKM warrior. if i ever got hacked i could live without my items, i could replace anything important. but i could never replace my characters.
if this doesnt get implemented and i get hacked then it would make the decision for me to not but gw2

the cost is irrelevant next to the worth of your company reputation and our future custom.

If development cost is an issue, have it a paid for option in the online store. I'm sure 10 bucks is a small price to pay for peace of mind..

if anet can implement a 30 day char name change on the tournaments "Tolkano[Tournament]" then why cant they introduce a similar code for actual char locking

You could just make it so you have to sign into your attached PlayNC account to lock or unlock a character.

Well I came back here to answer to the poll. I would pay for this service. I think 5-10 bucks would be sufficient. But I would hope the options are robust if I am paying for it. Just so more people would be willing to pay for it to get the feature. I would ask for several options from 30 days, to 6 months to perma-lock. And as many characters as you want. PvE only though. Seems silly to lock a PvP character, not that anyone suggested it.

I know the forum polls don't really represent the 4 million accounts in GW. But if 21% of the 4 mil accounts payed 5 bucks for the service, hmm seems like a nice chunk of change. Even if only 5% payed 5 bucks that would generate 500,000 buckaroos. Charge 10 for it and you got a million dollars. Seems like that might pay for the service. Maybe not. I have no clue how Anet's finances are managed and what it cost to keep servers running. May not be able to do it .

And for the qq's that want to change there mind. Well to be frank I would ignore them. They paid for a service and now want to retract. Have auto responder email back to those support tickets, "Umm, sorry you did it we can't do anything about it."

Anyway for the record I'm not holding my breath. But I will be diligent on my part. Keeping my account/computer as secure as I possibly can.
